Would you think someone could make a horror flick out of an old fairy tale? As good ol’ Johnny would say, “Oh yeah!” This one was frickin’ skeery.
A great cast with Sophia “Beverly” Lillis from It: Chapter 2 fame as Gretel and Alice Krige (you will recognize her immediately), even Sam Leakey who played an eight year old Hansel. All three did a fantastic job in their roles. Rarely do I see a movie this well acted.
Now I usually don’t pay much attention to cinematography, but Jiminy Christmas, this one was stunning. Every scene looked like a masters painting. Quite extraordinary.
Only one tiny flaw in this one. As we all know, I have a pet peeve about clichés. And there was one here (repeated twice) that were the only moments that distracted me from the plot and mesmerizing cinematography. Twice, the witch called Sophia “my pretty”. Come on, man! Really? But this film was so well done, I can forgive this egregious transgression.
I don’t like to go into a lot of details with surprisingly good movies, so if you like scary movies, this is a must see – twelve Freddy Kruegers out of thirteen.
